Suggs Leads Seahawks Past Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, New York – Senior guard Lacey Suggs scored a game-high 17 points, including 13 in the second half, and grabbed seven rebounds to lead UNCW to a 62-59 Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball victory over Hofstra at the Mack Sports Complex on Friday evening.

The Seahawks, who snapped a four-game losing streak, improved to 6-13 overall and 3-5 in the CAA. Hofstra, meanwhile, dipped to 3-16 overall and 0-8 against league foes after losing its 10th straight game.

Suggs anchored three UNCW players in double figures after making 6-of-8 shots from the floor along with a 4-for-6 showing at the free throw line.

Junior forward Carol-Anne Obusek added 11 points with six rebounds and a career-high five blocks while senior guard Ahyiona Vason chipped in 10 points with five assists and five steals.

Hofstra was paced by redshirt sophomore forward Jaylen Hines' 16 points and nine rebounds while sophomore guard JaKayla Brown contributed 12 points off the bench. Freshman guard Sorelle Ineza tallied 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field and a 3-for-5 effort from the foul line.

Key Moment: UNCW used a 19-3 run over a six-minute span to turn a 23-20 deficit into a 39-26 advantage with 7:18 remaining in the third quarter. Suggs scored eight points to ignite the spurt while senior guard Moriah Crisp sank a pair of three-pointers.

Game Notes:
  • UNCW has won four consecutive pairings against Hofstra, but the Pride still holds a slim 19-18 advantage in the all-time series.
  • The Seahawks shot 54.3 percent from the field against Hofstra, marking their best shooting performance since hitting 51.0 percent of their shots at William & Mary on Jan. 10 … It is the fourth time this season UNCW has made at least 50.0 percent of its field goal attempts.
  • UNCW forced Hofstra into making 27 turnovers, which are the most by an opponent this season … The Seahawks converted those miscues into 21 points.
  • Suggs has scored in double figures in 10 of her last 11 games … She also led the Seahawks in scoring for the seventh time this season.
  • Suggs also surpassed the 900-point mark for her college career and has now scored 913 points … She needs 20 points to move into 20th place on the Seahawks' all-time scoring list.
  • Obusek became the first UNCW player to record five or more blocked shots in a game since Jordan Henry had five rejections against Hofstra on Jan. 20, 2017.
  • Led by Crisp and Vason, the Seahawks registered 13 steals against Hofstra, marking the eighth time this season they have had 10 or more thefts … Crisp had a career-high five steals in addition to five steals from Vason.
Up Next: The Seahawks complete their three-game road swing on Sunday, Feb. 2, with a 2 p.m. CAA matinee at Northeastern.
