Winning Streak Halted At Five For Volleyhawks

DURHAM, N.C. – UNCW saw its winning streak halted at five on Friday as Duke dealt the Seahawks a3-1 loss at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The five-match winning streak was the longest for the program to open a season since 2001, when UNCW also went 5-0.

The Seahawks dropped to 5-1 but gained a split of Friday's matches by clipping Appalachian State in five sets earlier in the day. Duke, meanwhile, pushed it winning streak to three and now stands at 3-2 on the young season.

"I'm really proud of how our team battled and kept fighting in both matches today," said Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "Offensively we were consistent, didn't make a lot of errors, but at the same time against Duke we needed to be willing to take more risks with how we score. Jaime (Thomas) had a solid debut against Appalachian State and both Kendall (Bender) and Madison (Peters) played fearless against Duke. I'm excited to see how we continue to grow this season."

Senior Kendall Bender hit .556 in the Duke match, committing just one error in 18 attacks while recording 11 kills. Junior Jaime Thomas led the Seahawks with 12 kills and added five digs.

UNCW junior Brynn Montgomery posted a double-double of 16 assists and 10 digs.

Duke's Ade Owokoniran led all with 17 kills on the night while Payton Schwantz added 14 kills and rounded out a double-double of with 10 digs.

In the first match of the tournament, UNCW upended Appalachian State in five sets, winning the fifth set 15-12. Senior Madison Peters finished with a season-high 17 kills, one off her career high of 18 set last season. Thomas, meanwhile, posted career-highs and her first career double-double with 13 kills and17 digs.

The Seahawks close out their weekend action on Saturday with a noon start against Wofford in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
