Blue Hens Rally Late To Upend Seahawks

NEWARK, Del. – Trailing 12-10 in the fifth set, Delaware scored the final five points to clip UNCW, 15-12, and take a key early Colonial Athletic Association match in five sets (23-25, 25-15, 25-21, 14-25, 12-15) on Saturday at the Carpenter Center.

The Blue Hens ran their records to 9-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference while the Seahawks dropped to 10-5 and 0-2. UNCW has now dropped its last four true road matches.

The Blue Hens called timeout following a UNCW block that gave the Seahawks a 12-10 lead in the fifth set. UD, however, rebounded to rattle off the next five points for the win. Kills by Maria Bellinger and Adelina Rivera highlighted the rally, which also included a pair of Blue Hen blocks.

UNCW's Brynn Montgomery matched teammate Jaime Thomas with a team-high 11 kills and fashioned her third triple-double with 16 digs and 16 assists, both team-highs. Thomas added 16 digs to post her own double-double.

Bellinger, the CAA's top hitter, held match-high honors with 16 kills while Lani Mason chipped in 11. Setter Ezgi Basaranlar finished with 50 assists while libero Andie Hanus collected 30 digs.

Neither team was able to get on track offensively as UNCW hit just .046 for the match while UD overcame a sluggish start to finish at .139.

The Seahawks held a 14-11 advantage in blocks thanks to Madison Peters and Kendall Bender both recording six total blocks.

UNCW returns to Hanover Hall next weekend for matches against William & Mary and Elon on Oct. 4 and 6, respectively. The W&M match will start at 7 p.m.
