Volleyhawks Take It In Five!


WILMINGTON, N.C. – Triple-doubles from freshman Katie Lanz and junior Brynn Montgomery helped UNCW win a five-set thriller from Drake (25-19, 25-17, 22-25, 23-25, 15-9) Friday night at Trask Coliseum in the Hampton Inns Classic.

The Seahawks ran their record to 9-2 overall and 4-0 at home while the Bulldogs dipped to 5-7.

For Montgomery, it was her second triple-double of the season and her career while Lanz notched her first as a Seahawk. Montgomery finished with 10 kills, 21 assists and 12 digs while Lantz totaled 15 kills, 26 assists and 10 digs.

Not to be lost in the shuffle was senior Madison Peters' career-high tying 17 kills while hitting .593 for the night, committing just one hitter error in 27 swings.

The Seahawks won the opening two sets before dropping the next two as Drake rallied to force a fifth set. With the score tied at 6-all in the fifth, UNC W rattled off eight consecutive points for a 14-6 lead. Lanz highlighted the outburst with four kills.

Drake's Emily Plock held match-high honors with 19 kills and hit .370 in 46 attacks. Bulldog setter Paige Aspinwall doled out a match-high 35 assists.

Defensively, UNCW's Anna Weissmann finished with a career-high 22 digs as UNCW owned a 75-54 advantage. At the net, though, Gillian Gergen's seven total blocks led the Bulldogs to a 12-5 advantage.

The Seahawks host Western Carolina at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday followed by a 5 p.m. first-serve against North Carolina A&T.
