Lanz, Bender Named All-Tournament

Seahawks went 2-1 at the Davidson Ivitational

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson swept UNCW to win its own tournament on Saturday at Belk Arena.

Davidson finished its tournament 3-0 to run its record to 5-4 while the Seahawks saw a brief three-match winning streak halted and fell to 8-2.

"Obviously not the outcome we wanted against Davidson," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "They put pressure on us with their serving and blocking and we just didn't have the right response tonight. Against Presbyterian, our offense was very consistent, and we got a lot of hitters involved. Brynn (Montgomery) and Katie (Lanz) did a great job all weekend with a modified lineup that allows both to be versatile as setters and attackers."

Against Davidson, the Seahawks held a 24-19 lead in the opening set, but the Wildcats rattled off seven unanswered points to win the set, 26-24. Davidson finished off the sweep by scores of 25-11 and 25-18.

DC's Hattie Rodriguez finished with a match-high 11 kills as the Wildcats used a strong block (11 on the match) and forced UNCW into hitting just .009 for the match.

Earlier in the day, UNCW dropped the opening set to Presbyterian before regrouping to win the next three sets (22-25, 25-14, 25-11, 25-15) for the win.

Six different Seahawks had at least seven kills as the Seahawks hit a season-high .363, which also ranks 10th all-time at UNCW. Senior Kendall Bender, junior Jaime Thomas and freshman Brooks Hanshumaker all finished with nine kills while freshman Katie Lanz and junior Brynn Montgomery added nine apiece and Madison Peters, a senior, had seven.

Lanz and Bender were named to the all-tournament team.

Next up for UNCW is its final non-conference tournament of the season. The Seahawks host Western Carolina, Drake and North Carolina A&T in the Hampton Inns Seahawk Classic beginning on Sept. 20. All matches will be played in Trask Coliseum.
