WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia – Senior forward
Phillip Goodrum scored the game-tying goal with 1:10 remaining in regulation as UNCW rallied to secure a 1-1 double-overtime draw against William & Mary in the Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer opener for both teams at Martin Family Stadium on Saturday evening.
The tie allowed the Seahawks to extend their unbeaten streak to three games while moving their record 2-2-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the CAA. William & Mary, meanwhile, stands at 0-2-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the CAA following its second straight tie.
William & Mary wasted little time in building the early lead as freshman Alexander Levengood scored just 35 seconds into the contest off assists from freshman Diba Nwegbo and senior Reeves Trott.
Goodrum evened the score at 1-1 in the 89th minute when he took a pass from freshman
Gabe Mercer and scored his third goal of the season past freshman goalkeeper Kieran Baskett.
The Seahawks outshot William & Mary by a 6-2 margin in the extra periods, but four saves from Bassett prevented UNCW from netting the game-winning marker.
Baskett finished the game with a season-high 11 saves for the Tribe, which was outshot by a commanding 18-8 margin. Freshman goalkeeper
Gabriel Perrotta, the reigning CAA Rookie of the Week, tallied two saves in the draw for the Seahawks.
