Volleyball Rolls Past Eagles In Sweep

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Senior Kendall Bender's nine kills and five aces led an impressive offense as UNCW open the Davidson Invitational on Friday with a sweep (25-21,25-21,25-21) of North Carolina Central at the Baker Sports Complex.

The win raises UNCW's record to 7-1 while the Eagles stay winless at 0-9 to open the season.

"Offensively, we had a really solid match," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "I love the fact our middles got involved in the offense, but defensively, NCCU found creative ways to get kills and they didn't commit a lot of errors. I'm happy we go the win, but we have some more work to do this weekend."

Joining Bender with nine or more kills were senior Madison Peters with a match-high 11, junior Jaime Thomas with 10 and freshman Katie Lanz added nine of her own. The Seahawks hit a season-high .292 in the win and totaled eight aces.

NCCU, which hit .291 on the afternoon, was led by Alcox's nine kills with Young chipping in six. Villegas finished with 13 digs to lead all players.

Lanz posted career-high with her nine kills and 25 assists while Anna Weissmann had 12digs to lead UNCW.

Sophomore Rebecca Nuanez finished with a career-high tying seven kills and combined with Bender to hit .560 for the match.

The Seahawks continue their tournament appearance on Saturday with two matches. UNCW takes on Presbyterian at 10 a.m. and host Davidson at 6 p.m.
