Volleyhawks Win Season-Opening Tournament


WILMINGTON, N.C. –UNCW's Kyla Augustine's first career double-double of 12 kills and 10 digs helped UNCW knock off Duquesne, 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-22), to win the championship match of the Hampton Inns Invitational on Saturday at Hanover Hall. Augustine was named the tournament's most valuable player.

The Seahawks (3-0) swept through the weekend schedule with a win over North Florida on Friday and a win over Charleston Southern earlier on Saturday. The Dukes, meanwhile, finished 2-1 with wins over UNF and CSU.

In the championship match, the Seahawks outhit the Dukes, .279-.205, and recorded 12 aces, including three from Augustine and three each from freshmen Katie Lanz and Ashley Thompson.

The Seahawks rounded out their impressive evening win with a 9-4 advantage in blocks, led by senior Kendall Bender with five and sophomore Rebecca Nuanez with four.

Joining Augustine in double-figure kills was senior Madison Peters and in digs, junior Anna Weissmann finished with 18.

Liz Wayne, an all-tournament selection, led the Dukes with nine kills.

In the opening match against Charleston Southern, junior Brynn Montgomery led a balanced offense with nine kills, and she added 11 assists. Nuanez, meanwhile, had a career-high seven kills in 10 attacks.
Lanz paced the Seahawks with 15 assists.

Carsyn Starr, of CSU, had a match-high 11 kills.
