Peters, Bender Pace UNCW In 3-1 Win


WILMINGTON, N.C. – Behind 10 kills apiece from seniors Madison Peters and Kendall Bender, UNCW rolled past North Florida, 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-21, 25-18) in the season opener on Friday at the Hampton Inns Invitational.

While the Seahawks ran their record to 8-3 in season openers under Head Coach Amy Bambenek, UNF fell to 1-1 after topping Charleston Southern earlier in the day in the tournament opener.

Peters and Bender collected three kills apiece in the third set as the Seahawks snapped a 1-all score through two sets. Defensively the duo led the Seahawks at the net with nine and eight total blocks, respectively. The Seahawks out blocked the Ospreys, 16-4, on the evening.

UNF's Taryn Griffin and Gabby O'Connell finished with 13 and 11 kills, respectively.

UNCW junior Kyla Augustine finished with eight kills and a block while sophomore Rebecca Nuanez chipped in three kills and eight total blocks.

Junior Brynn Montgomery fashioned a double-double of 29 assists and 11 digs for the Seahawks while junior teammate Anna Weissmann totaled a team-high 20 digs.

Rocio Moro led all players with an impressive 27 digs while setter Julianna Askew handed out 29 assists and recorded seven kills.

The Seahawks continue their tournament appearance with two matches on Saturday. UNCW faces Charleston Southern at noon and closes out the schedule with a 7 p.m. first-serve against Duquesne.
