Diamond Hawks Split With Blue Hens


WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW pounded out a season-high 16 hits and averted a sweep at the hands of Colonial Athletic Association rival Delaware with a 10-2 win in the nightcap of a twinbill on Saturday at Brooks Field. The Blue Hens clinched a series with a 9-5 win in the opener.

The Seahawks moved to 24-26 overall while the Hens dipped to 19-28. Both teams are 8-10 in the CAA with UD owning the tie-breaker.

Greg Jones had four hits, including his fourth homer of the season, in game two and scored three runs. Matt Suggs, who drove in two runs, and Jackson Meadows had three hits apiece.

Landen Roupp (3-2) earned the win with a career-long seven innings in the second game. Roupp allowed one run on four hits, walked two and struck out four.

Erik Bowen had three hits for the Blue Hens and Jordan Hutchins added an RBI single.

Jack Dubecq (2-4) took the loss in the nightcap.

Up next: The Seahawks visit conference-leader Elon for three games, beginning on May 10 with a 6 p.m. start.

How it happened:
Game 1: The Blue Hens used a four-run second inning to put the game out of reach. Kevin Mohollen keyed the UD lineup with three hits and scored four runs. Bowren and Hutchins added two hits each. Joey Silan (3-4) earned the win, striking out eight in eight innings of work. Zarion Sharpe (1-3) was roughed up for five runs, three earned, over 2.2 innings.

Game 2: UNCW built a 5-0 lead after two innings with Jones' two-run shot highlighting a four-run second inning.

Notes: Jones moved into third place with 34 steals on UNCW's single season list … Kep Brown and Jones extended their consecutive games on base safely streaks to 33 and 24, respectively … Brown's streak is seventh longest in UNCW history … Cole Weiss has an 11-game hitting streak.
