Gesell K's 11 As UNCW Rallies Past Phoenix, 7-5


ELON, N.C. – UNCW staked Colonial Athletic Association regular season champion Elon to a five-run lead before rallying for a 7-5 win behind Luke Gesell's career-high 11 strikeouts on Friday at Latham Park.

The Seahawks picked up a vital win in the conference standings while improving to 25-26 overall and 9-10 in the CAA. The Phoenix, meanwhile, dropped to 29-21 and 18-4 in the league.

UNCW stayed tied for fourth at 9-10 along with Northeastern and James Madison. Delaware (8-11) dropped into seventh following a 5-4 loss to Hofstra.

Gesell (5-4) tossed a career-high eight innings in picking up the win. The junior righthander allowed five runs on eight hits and a walk.

Blake Morgan nailed down his third save of the season with a shutout ninth.

Elon's Dean McCarthy (1-3) was tagged with the loss in relief. The lefthander allowed two runs, one earned, over three innings.

Cole Weiss led the Seahawks with three hits and score twice. Greg Jones and Matt Suggs added two hits apiece as UNCW out-hit the Phoenix, 11-8.

Cam Devanney collected three hits of his own, including a three-run homer that highlighted Elon's five-run third inning.

Trailing 5-0 through three innings, the Seahawks chipped away at the lead, scoring one in the fourth, three in the fifth, one more in the sixth and took a 7-5 lead with two in the seventh.

Up next: The series continues Saturday with a1 p.m. start at Latham Park.

How it happened: The Seahawks loaded the bases with one out in the seventh and a ground ball to second turned into a two-run error. Bridges hit a sharp groundball to second, but the throw to second wasn't handled cleanly and Jones and Weiss came across to score for a 7-5 lead.

Notes: The Seahawks stole three bases and collected four doubles on the game … Weiss and Kep Brown extended their hitting streaks to 12 and 11 games, respectively … Brown also saw his consecutive games reached safely extend to 34 games … The bottom five hitters in the Elon lineup was 1-for-16 … Jones moved into the conference lead with 35 stolen bases.
