Seahawks Stumble In Series Opener, 7-5

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Delaware starter Brandon Walter struck out 11 over seven innings as the Blue Hens opened a key Colonial Athletic Association series at Brooks Field with a 7-5 win over UNCW on Friday.

The Hens ran their record to 18-27 and moved into a tie with the Seahawks at 7-9. UNCW dropped its third straight to slide to 23-25.

Walter (5-5) earned the win allowing four runs on nine hits and a walk.

Offensively, Joseph Carpenter extended his hitting streak to 24 games with a pair of singles. Erik Bowen drove in two runs with a single in the fourth inning.

Zachary Bridges, Jackson Meadows and Chris Thorburn both had two hits for the Seahawks.

UNCW starter Luke Gesell (4-4) took the loss and didn't get out of the fourth inning. He surrendered four runs, but just one earned.

Up next: The series continues Saturday with a 2 p.m. start.

How it happened: The Hens staged a two-out rally against Gesell in the fourth. With two out, Gesell walked back-to-back hitters and an error loaded the bases. Bowren followed with a two-run single through the leftside. The final run came across on a passed ball for a 4-1 lead.

Notes: The game started 1:18 late due to adverse weather in the region … UNCW had a season-high seven doubles among its 11 hits … All five UNCW runs came on two out hits.
