Shutout Win Clinches CAA Berth

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Junior Zarion Sharpe struck out eight and was one of five UNCW pitchers to combine on a 4-0 shutout win over James Madison on Saturday at Brooks Field as the Seahawks clinched a Colonial Athletic Association tournament berth.

The Seahawks evened their record at 28-28 and 12-12 in the league and will be the fifth-seed at next week's championship tournament in Harrisonburg, Va. The Dukes, who will be the sixth-seed, dropped to 31-24 and 11-13.

Sharpe (2-3) allowed just three hits and two walks over 5.1 innings before making way for the bullpen. Senior Branden Mulier recorded the final two outs to notch his first career save.

Brooks Baldwin led UNCW with two hits and scored twice. Greg Jones tripled in two runs in a three-run second inning.

Brady Harju also had two hits for the Dukes, who stranded 10 baserunners.

JMU starter Michael Bechtold (3-1) took his first loss of the season.

The Seahawks turned a triple play in the eighth inning. With runners on first and second, Jackson Meadows snared a line drive for the first out, flipped the ball to Jones at second for the second out and Jones' relay to first completed the triple play. It was the first triple play turned by the Seahawks since doing so against Army in the ninth inning of an elimination game at the 2013 Charlottesville Regional.

Up next: The Seahawks play fourth-seeded Northeastern at noon on May 22.

How it happened: Baldwin opened the second inning with a single and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Chris Thorburn followed with a single through the right side that scored Baldwin with the first run. Later in the inning, with runners on first and second, Jones tripled into the right field bullpen to score two more as UNCW took a 3-0 lead.

Notes: The Seahawks remain the only program in the conference to compete in all 34 championship tournaments … The triple for Jones was his eighth of the season and he is now second on UNCW's single season list … Cole Weiss singled in the fourth inning and has now reached base in 19 consecutive games … Sharpe has struck out 18 batters and allowed no runs over his last 11.2 innings.
