Roupp Masterful In Crucial CAA Win

Sophomore righthander strikes out career-high 11

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Sophomore Landen Roupp struck out a career-high 11 and UNCW opened an early lead as the Seahawks picked up a crucial 7-4 win over James Madison on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks (27-28, 11-12 CAA) moved into a tie for fourth PLACE with JMU (31-23, 11-12) and William & Mary. UNCW needs to win on Saturday or have William & Mary win at Hofstra.

Elon, Charleston, Northeastern and JMU have all clinched tournament berths.

Saturday will be UNCW Head Coach Mark Scalf's final home game and he will be honored following the game. UNCW's five seniors, Justin Crump, Blake Deatherage, Brandon Mulier, Blake Morgan and Justin Walke, will be recognized prior to the game.

Roupp (5-2) earned his third straight win and pitched into the seventh inning for the third consecutive start. The righthander fanned 11 while allowing a run on four hits and four walks over 6.1 innings.

Henry Ryan earned his third save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

Greg Jones homered, scored twice and stole two bases for UNCW. Brooks Baldwin and Chris Thorburn each had two runs batted in.

Trevon Dabney and Brady Harju had two hits apiece for the Dukes, who held an 8-7 advantage in hits.

Starter Nick Stewart (4-4) took the loss, allowing four runs, one earned, in four innings of work.

Up next: The Seahawks and Dukes close out the series with a 2 p.m. start. UNCW will recognize its five seniors prior to the game and following the game, a special ceremony honoring Head Coach Mark Scalf will be held.

How it happened: UNCW jumped in front with three runs in the first inning. Jones opened the inning reaching on an error and Cole Weiss followed with a single. With two out, Baldwin singled in the first run and Thorburn made it 3-0 with a two-run single up the middle.
