Seahawks Blanked In Series Opener

WILMINGTON, N.C. – James Madison starter Kevin Kelly delivered six shutout innings as the Dukes knocked off UNCW, 2-0, in the first game of a key Colonial Athletic Association series at Brooks Field on Thursday.

The Dukes remained in a tie for third at 11-11 in the CAA while improving to 31-22. UNCW, meanwhile, dropped to 10-12 and 26-28 overall. At 10-12, the Seahawks are in sixth, depending on the final score of Charleston at Delaware. With a Delaware win, the Blue Hens will be tied with the Seahawks for the final tournament berth.

Kelly (7-6) limited the Seahawks to two singles, walked three and struck out seven. Nick Robertson nailed down his eighth save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

Trevon Dabney led all hitters with two hits and scored twice as the Dukes out-hit the Seahawks, 5-2.

UNCW starter Luke Gesell (5-5) took the loss. Gesell struck out seven but allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings.

Noah Bridges and Brooks Baldwin had UNCW's only two hits of the night.

Up next: The Seahawks and Dukes play again on Friday at 6 p.m. UNCW will be donning pink jerseys which will be auctioned off during the game. All proceeds from the jerseys will go to the Beyond the Pink Foundation for breast cancer survivors.

How it happened: The Dukes scored in the first and third innings as Dabney led off both innings with singles. Harju plated him in the first with a single and Novak made it 2-0 with an RBI ground out in the third.

Notes: UNCW dropped to 12-16 in one and two-run games … Cole Weiss saw his 14-game hitting streak halted.
