WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team's senior class has accomplished many things over the last four years, but in their final appearance at Boseman Field on Sunday afternoon, the Seahawk seniors added one more accolade to that list: the program's first-ever Colonial Athletic Association series victory over Hofstra.
Â
Led by the seven seniors, the Seahawks earned the historic series win by defeating the Pride, 6-3, in the series finale to take two of three games against Hofstra, the defending CAA champion.
Â
The win elevated the Seahawks' record to 26-25 overall and moved them into sole possession of fourth place in the CAA standings at 8-10. Hofstra, meanwhile, dipped into a three-way tie for fifth place at 7-11 in the league while running its overall mark to 20-25.
Â
Several UNCW seniors made key contributions to the Seahawks' victory in their home finale. Senior
Hannah Adamczyk drove in two runs with a double in the bottom of the second inning while senior
Anna Hessenthaler reached base three times with a single in the third inning and two walks.
Â
Senior
Kali Jones added a 1-for-3 showing with a run scored as the Seahawks put together a 10-hit attack against Hofstra.
Â
The senior pitching tandem of
Haley Lenderman and
Laurel Koontz combined to help the Seahawks to Sunday's victory. Lenderman upped her record to 10-13 on the season after allowing two earned runs on five hits over 4.1 innings while Koontz, who earned a complete game victory over the Pride on Saturday, threw the final 2.2 innings to secure her second save of the season.
Â
Hofstra, which has lost four of its last five games, was led by redshirt senior Lydia Witkowski's two hits. Freshman Madison Burns took the loss in the circle after surrendering six runs on 10 hits with four walks and a strikeout.
Â
How It Happened: The Seahawks strung together five consecutive hits in a five-run second inning and take a 5-0 lead over Hofstra. Adamczyk drove in two runs with her double while redshirt junior
Rachel Willis and freshmen
Janel Gamache and
Jada Santiago contributed run-scoring singles.
