Charleston Sweeps Friday Doubleheader

MOUNT PLEASANT, South Carolina – UNCW will have to wait one more day to secure a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association Softball Championship field after the College of Charleston handed the Seahawks a pair of setbacks at Patriots Point on Friday evening.

The Cougars, who upped their record to 24-28 overall and remained alive in the quest for a CAA Tournament spot with an 8-12 league record, rallied to win the first game by a 7-5 margin before securing the doubleheader sweep with a 5-1 victory in the nightcap. UNCW, meanwhile, dipped to 26-27 overall, including an identical 8-12 record in the circuit.

A trio of Charleston players – senior Madi Brown, senior Kelly Sinclair and freshman Noel Dominiquez – each collected three hits while Lexee Emanuel drove in three runs. Junior Summer Jenkins earned both wins in the circle in relief while junior Izzy Berouty tallied a pair of saves.

Senior Lacey Fox went 2-for-5 in the doubleheader for the Seahawks with a pair of runs batted in while freshman Logan Bjorson added a two-hit showing.

How It Happened – Game 1: Charleston overcame a 5-2 deficit by scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior Chandler Sparkman singled in a run before the Cougars tied the game with a walk and a hit by pitch with the bases loaded. Freshman Savannah Huff gave Charleston its two-run advantage with a two-run single up the middle to complete the comeback.

How It Happened – Game 2: The Cougars took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Emanuel a three-run home run with one out in the frame. UNCW narrowed the margin to 3-1 in the top of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by senior Hannah Adamczyk before Charleston answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame.

Notes: Adamczyk became the sixth player in program history to reach 100 career runs batted in with her sacrifice fly in the second game … Charleston has now won four straight games against the Seahawks after a nine-game losing streak … The Seahawks are now 10-17 away from home this season.

Up Next: UNCW and Charleston complete the regular season on Saturday, May 4, with a single game at 2 p.m. The winner of Saturday's game will secure a berth in the CAA Tournament, which starts on Wednesday, May 8, at James Madison's Veterans Memorial Park.
