WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Senior
Hannah Adamczyk belted out four hits, including three doubles, and drove in five runs to lead UNCW to a split of its Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader against Hofstra on Alumni Day at Boseman Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Seahawks, who are now 25-25 overall and 7-10 in the CAA, overcame a 12-4 loss in the series opener to claim a 6-1 triumph in the nightcap. Hofstra, meanwhile, saw its record move to 20-24 overall with an identical 7-10 mark in league play.
Adamczyk went 4-for-6 in the doubleheader with three doubles and five runs batted in. After going 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the opener, the Indian Trail, N.C., product was 2-for-2 in the nightcap with three runs batted in.
Freshman
Jada Santiago, the reigning CAA Rookie-of-the-Week, added an identical 4-for-6 showing, including a double and a triple, while scoring three runs. Freshman
Logan Bjorson chipped in three hits while three other UNCW players contributed two hits apiece.
Senior
Laurel Koontz earned the win in the circle in the nightcap with the first complete game effort of her college career. The right-handed hurler, who holds a perfect 6-0 record this year, allowed just one run on eight hits with a strikeout.
Hofstra, which has dropped three of its last four contests, was led by junior Kristin Hallam, who went 3-for-7 with three runs scored and five runs batted in. Senior Courtney Scarpato, freshman Kasey Collins and freshman Meghan Giordano each tallied four hits in the twinbill for the Pride.
How It Happened – Game 1: After UNCW scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, Hofstra responded by tallying 10 consecutive runs over a three-inning span to take a 10-2 lead the Pride did not relinquish. Hallam drove in five of the runs with a single in the fourth inning and a double in the fifth inning.
How It Happened – Game 2: UNCW surged out to a 5-0 lead in the opening three innings, including a three-run first frame. Adamczyk drove in two runs with a double in the bottom of the first inning before adding another RBI double in the third inning.
Notes: Hofstra outhit UNCW by a 24-20 margin in the doubleheader, but was limited to just two extra-base hits … Freshman
Janel Gamache has reached base safely in seven consecutive games … UNCW improved to 17-5 when scoring first this season and 13-6 when scoring at least one run in the first inning … Adamczyk now has 39 career doubles, the third-highest total in program history … UNCW has now been hit by a pitch 60 times this season, extending its program record … UNCW and Hofstra remain tied with Towson for fourth place in the CAA standings at 7-10 after all three teams split a doubleheader on Saturday.
