Diamond Hawks Drop Series To Hofstra

 
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – UNCW scored twice late to narrow its deficit to 6-4, but Hofstra was able to earn a series win on Saturday at University Field.

The Pride, which has won its last four, ran its record to 10-24 on the season and 4-7 in the Colonial Athletic Association. UNCW, meanwhile, dropped its fourth straight to fall to 20-20 and 5-6.

Hofstra starter Ryan Rau (2-4) held the Seahawks in check over six innings for the win. The freshman left hander allowed two runs on three hits, walked none and fanned five.

Rob Weissheier had two hits, including his third homer of the season for the Pride. Quinn Parker added a solo shot, his second of the season.

Michael James pitched the ninth and earned his first save.

UNCW again struggled at the plate, being out-hit, 6-5. Riley Zayicek and Greg Jones both homered.

UNCW starter Zarion Sharpe (0-2) surrendered three runs, two earned, over four innings.

Up next: The Seahawks look to prevent a sweep on Sunday at noon.

How it happened: Despite getting on the board in the second inning, UNCW gave up for runs over the third through fifth innings as the Pride took a 4-1 lead. Hofstra struck for two in the fourth as Anthony D'Onofrio scored on a throwing error on a steal of third and Jimmy Joyce scored one batter later on a single from Ryan Morash.
