Diamond Hawks Drop Series Opener To Pride

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Three Hofstra pitches combined to two-hit UNCW as the Pride earned a 7-3 win over the Seahawks in a Colonial Athletic Association series opener on Friday at University Field.

The Pride, which won its third straight game, improved to 9-24 overall and 3-7 in the CAA. UNCW, meanwhile, has dropped three straight to slide to 20-19 and 5-5.

Anthony D'Onofrio keyed the Pride with a pair of doubles and RBI's while Sean Flaherty added a two-run double late in the game to give Hofstra a 7-2 lead. Ryan Morash hit a homer in the third inning to get the Pride on the board and in front early.

Jimmy Joyce (2-2) earned the win in relief while Jack Anderson earned his first save of the season.

Noah Bridges and Riley Zayicek both doubled and were the only Seahawks to get a hit. UNCW was 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position on the afternoon.

Luke Gesell (4-3) took the loss allowing three runs on four hits and a pair of walks over 5.1 innings.

Up next: The series continues on Saturday with a 3 p.m. start.

Notes: Both teams combined for 16 walks with the Seahawks drawing 10 … The Seahawks were hitless until the seventh when Zayicek doubled to center field.
