Seahawks Take Series Opener From Huskies


WILMINGTON, N.C. – Luke Gesell tied his career-high with seven strikeouts and Chris Thorburn collected three hits as UNCW knocked off Northeastern, 7-4, in the Colonial Athletic Association series opener on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks improved to 19-16 overall and 4-3 in the league. The Huskies, meanwhile, dipped to 16-17 and 6-4.

Gesell pitched into the seventh inning for the third consecutive start and lasted 6.2 innings. He surrendered four runs, two earned, on four hits. He did not walk a batter. Henry Ryan earned the save with a scoreless ninth, his second of the season.

Thorburn's three hits were a career high and he knocked in a run. Noah Liles and Kep Brown both added two hits apiece, Liles drove in a run and Brown plated two.

Cam Walsh paced the Huskies with two hits and scored a run. Ian Fair belted his team-leading sixth homer of the season, a two-run shot, in the top of the third to narrow NU's deficit to 4-3.

Tyler Brown (1-4) took the loss for Northeastern, lasting two innings and allowed six runs on seven hits and three walks.

Up next: The Seahawks and Huskies meet on Saturday for the second game of the series. First pitch is 2 p.m. Saturday will also be UNCW Baseball Alumni Day with the 1989 Colonial Athletic Association regular season champions being recognized prior to the game.

How it happened: The Seahawks erased a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with three runs. They added a run in the second and two more in the third for a 6-3 lead through three innings.

Inside the box score: The Seahawks scored 5-of-7 runners from third with less than two out and advanced runners in 15-of-24 opportunities … The Seahawks struck out a season-low three times.

Notes: Brown singled in a run in the first to extend his hitting streak to 18 games … Greg Jones, who drew three walks and singled, stole four bases for the third time this season and now has 25 on the season … Over his last four starts, Gesell is 3-0 with a 1.98 ERA, walked three and struck out 18 while limiting opponents to a .152 batting average.
