Diamond Hawks Clinch Series With 4-3 Win

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Kep Brown's single in the bottom of the eighth scored the go-ahead run as UNCW clinched its Colonial Athletic Association series with Northeastern on Saturday with a 4-3 win at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks upped their record in the CAA to 5-3 with the series clinching win and improved to 20-16 overall and have a three-game winning streak.

Brown's single extended his career-long hitting streak to 19 games and gave UNCW it's fourth win of the season in its final at bat.

Greg Jones drove in two runs with double in the third inning as UNCW built a 3-0 lead. Cole Weiss had two hits for UNCW.

Relievers Blake Deatherage (2-0) earned the win and Breydan Gorham notched his first career save with a perfect ninth.

NU starter Sean Mellen (4-1) went the distance for the first time this season in taking the loss. The lefthander struck out nine, walked two and allowed seven hits.

Scott Holzwasser knocked in two runs in the seventh inning as the Huskies tied the game at three-all. Jake Farrell led the Huskies with two hits.

Up next: The Seahawks and Huskies close out the series on Sunday with a noon start.

How it happened: Noah Bridges opened the eighth inning with popped up bunt that fell in for a hit when two Huskies collided trying to make the play. Jackson Meadows moved him into scoring position with a sac bunt. The Huskies intentionally walked Jones setting the stage for Brown. With the count at 1-2, Brown singled through the left side scoring Bridges from second to make it 4-3.

Notes: Northeastern landed its leadoff hitter on base in five innings … Both teams struggled hitting with runners on base with NU going 3-for-18 and UNCW 2-10 … UNCW pitchers held the Huskies 2-for-12 hitting with RISP … UNCW is now 13-11 at Brooks Field … UNCW starter Zarion Sharpe tossed 5.2 innings of two-hit shutout baseball but did not figure in the decision.
