JACKSONVILLE, Florida – Freshmen
Casey Jones and
Jada Santiago each collected three hits as UNCW split a pair of games during the second day of the Jacksonville/UNF Spring Break Challenge at Jacksonville's Pruitt Softball Complex on Saturday evening.
The Seahawks, who moved their record to 12-10 on the season, won their fifth straight game with a 6-3 victory over Georgetown in their opener before falling to Jacksonville by a 9-2 count.
Jones went 3-for-7 in the twinbill with a home run, two runs batted in and two runs scored while Santiago added a 3-for-8 effort at the plate with a run scored.
Senior
Haley Lenderman earned the victory against Georgetown after allowing one unearned run on three hits over 6.0 innings with five strikeouts and no walks. Senior
Laurel Koontz secured her first save of the season after giving up one hit with a strikeout in the final frame.
Junior
Rylee Pate took the loss against Jacksonville after surrendering nine runs, including four earned runs, on nine hits over 5.2 innings with three strikeouts.
How It Happened vs. Georgetown: The Seahawks opened a 4-0 lead by scoring twice in the first inning before adding a run in the second and sixth frames. Lenderman, meanwhile, scattered two hits over her six innings of work while authoring five strikeouts.
How It Happened vs. Jacksonville: Jacksonville scored four times over a three-inning span to take a 4-0 advantage before junior
Dominique Travers' two-run home run in the sixth inning trimmed the margin to 4-2. But, the Dolphins answered with five runs in the bottom of the frame for a 9-2 lead they did not relinquish.
Up Next: UNCW wraps up play at the Jacksonville/UNF Spring Break Challenge on Sunday, Mar. 10, with a 10 a.m. contest against La Salle. The Seahawks return home next weekend to begin a 10-game homestand with the Lafayette Ford Lincoln of Fayetteville Seahawk Softball Invitational.
