Diamond Hawks Run Winning Streak To Three


WILMINGTON, N.C. – Junior Cole Weiss continued his torrid stretch on Saturday helping the Seahawks to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Siena by the scores of 7-2 and 10-3 at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks ran their winning streak to three and their record to 9-7. The Saints, meanwhile, fell to 3-9.

Weiss drove in two runs in the opener and later knocked in five in the nightcap rout. He finished with four hits, two in each game, as his hitting streak grew to seven games. Weiss has driven in runs in each of those games and has totaled 18 runs batted in during that stretch.

In the opener, it was freshman Brooks Baldwin who paced the UNCW lineup with a pair of hits and four runs batted in. Baldwin connected on his team-leading third homer of the season, a two-run shot to left in the first inning for an early 2-0 lead.

Junior Luke Gesell (1-2) and red-shirt freshman Brody Lawson (2-0) were the beneficiaries of an offensive breakout for the Seahawks. Gesell went a career-high seven innings in game one while Lawson struck out a career-high 11 over five-plus innings in game two.

The Saints, who were held to four hits in each game, were led by Brian Kelly's two hits in the nightcap.

Siena's Tommy Miller (1-1) struck out 12 while taking the loss in game one and Brendan White (0-2) was saddled with the loss in game two.

Up next: The teams will play the series finale at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

How it happened:
Game 1 – Siena tied the game at 2-all in the top of the second, but the Seahawks broke the deadlock in the third on a RBI ground out by Weiss to take the lead and Baldwin pushed that lead to 4-2 with a RBI single one batter later.

Game 2 – Greg Jones' two-run double in the first inning gave the Seahawks a 3-0 lead it would never lose. Siena, though, narrowed its deficit to 5-3 in the sixth, but Weiss belted a grand slam in the bottom of the inning to make it 9-3 UNCW.

Inside the box score: The Seahawks had three two-out RBI's in each game … Red-shirt sophomore Nick Bruno struck out all six batters he faced inclosing out game 1 … UNCW pitchers allowed just two, two-out hits on the afternoon and none (0-9) in the opener … Siena went 1-for-8 with RISP in both game … UNCW was 5-for-14 in those situations … Jackson Meadows scored three runs, stole three bases and had two hits in game one.

Notes: UNCW is now 9-0 against Siena all-time … Jones saw his consecutive games reached safely streak halted at 25 … Seahawk pitchers struck out 27 hitters over the two games and walked just five … Baldwin has a four-game hitting streak and has nine RBI's over his last three games.
