Baseball Edged, 3-2, By Tribe In Series Opener

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Matt McDermott's run-scoring single through the left side lifted William & Mary to a 3-2 win over UNCW in the Colonial Athletic Association series opened on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Tribe improved to 17-7 overall and 2-2 in the league while the Seahawks dropped their second straight to slip to 15-12 and 3-1.

UNCW's Chris Thorburn was the only player in the game to have two hits, including a game-tying double in the eighth inning.

Chris Farrell (2-1) picked up the win with two innings of relief.

UNCW reliever Blake Morgan (2-2) took the loss.

Luke Gesell took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but Zach Pearson ended this bid. Gesell went seven innings, allowing one run on two hits and two walks while striking out five.

Up next: The Seahawks and Tribe continue their series with a 2 p.m. start on Saturday. Brody Lawson (3-0) goes for the Seahawks and the Tribe turns to Bodie Sheehan (2-0).

How it happened: In the top of the ninth, Morgan struck out the first batter he faced, but the ball got away from the catcher and Matthew Trehub reached safely. A sac bunt moved pinch runner Phil Conti into scoring position. Morgan struck out the next batter and the Seahawks turned to Justin Crump to end the inning. Crump surrendered the game-winning hit when McDermott singled on a 1-2 offering.

Inside the box score: UNCW got its leadoff hitter on safely just once and went 1-for-10 with two outs.

Notes: Kep Brown launched his sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth to give UNCW a 1-0 lead … Brown has now driven in runs in 10 straight games setting a program record … The Seahawk bullpen is now 11-6.
