NC State Edges Seahawks, 3-2

RALEIGH, North Carolina – Freshman Janel Gamache and redshirt junior Rachel Willis each drove in a run, but it was not enough as UNCW dropped a 3-2 decision against NC State in non-conference softball action at Dail Softball Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The Seahawks dropped to 20-14 on the season after their second straight loss while NC State improved to 17-14.

NC State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when junior Skylar Johnson scored on a wild pitch. The Wolfpack upped the advantage to 2-0 in the third inning on a RBI double by sophomore Logan Morris.

UNCW cut the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning as Gamache hit a double to right center field, which allowed sophomore Hunter Bizzell to score. But, NC State answered in the bottom of the frame with a solo home run by junior Angie Rizzi to left field.

Willis closed the gap to 3-2 with a RBI single in the top of the fifth inning, but the Seahawks were unable to get any closer.

Junior Devin Wallace earned the win in the circle for NC State, allowing two runs on three hits over 4.1 innings with nine strikeouts. Freshman Sydney Nester secured her first save of the season after not allowing a hit over the final 2.2 innings.

Junior Rylee Pate dropped to 9-6 on the season after giving up two runs on three hits over 3.0 innings.

Up Next: UNCW resumes Colonial Athletic Association play this weekend with a three-game series at Elon. Due to the forecast of inclement weather on Sunday, the Phoenix and the Seahawks will now play a single game on Friday, Mar. 29, at 6 p.m. before a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 30, starting at 1 p.m.
