Seahawks Sweep Towson in CAA Opener

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Freshman Jada Santiago had four hits and drove in two runs while senior Lacey Fox chipped in a game-ending home run as UNCW opened its Colonial Athletic Association schedule with a doubleheader sweep over Towson at Boseman Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Seahawks, who ran their record to 20-12 overall and 2-0 in the CAA, rallied for a 5-3 win in the opener before closing out the sweep with a 4-1 victory over the Tigers, who fall to 13-12 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Santiago, who has hit safely in four straight games, registered a 2-for-4 performance in the opener before adding two more hits, including her fifth home run of the season, in the nightcap. Fox, meanwhile, contributed a hit in each contest, including the walk-off home run in the first game.

Senior Laurel Koontz improved to 3-0 on the season in the circle after pitching a scoreless inning in relief in the opener. Junior Rylee Pate secured the second game victory with a complete-game effort, allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts.

Towson, which opened a five-game road swing on Saturday, was paced by junior Jaclyn Mounie's three-hit effort. Senior Nicole Stockinger accounted for the Tigers' lone run in the nightcap with a solo home run in the second inning.

How It Happened – Game 1: After Towson took a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning on a wild pitch, the Seahawks rallied to win in the seventh inning with Fox's home run, a three-run shot with two outs in the frame.

How It Happened – Game 2: UNCW broke a 1-all tie with three unanswered runs. Senior Anna Hessenthaler and freshman Janel Gamache each hit RBI singles in the fourth inning before Santiago added an insurance run in the fifth inning with a RBI groundout.

Up Next: UNCW and Towson finish their three-game series on Sunday, Mar. 24, with a single game at noon.
