Lawson Dominates In Series Clincher


TOWSON, Md. – Brody Lawson remained undefeated on the season with another strong outing as UNCW clinched a series win over Towson on Saturday with an 8-4 win at Schuerholz Park.

The Seahawks ran their record to 13-10 with the win and 2-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Tigers, meanwhile, fell to 3-17 with their fifth straight setback.

Lawson (3-0) tossed a career-high 7.1 innings and allowed three runs, two earned. He struck out seven, walked two and allowed two hits. He retired 18 Tigers in a row at one point.

Six Seahawks finished with two hits apiece. Noah Bridges led the Seahawks with three runs batted in while Greg Jones and Riley Zayicek both scored twice.

Trent Gast-Woodard went 1-3 with an RBI double in the ninth inning for Towson.

Starter Gavin Weyman took the loss to fall to 0-4.

Up next: The series concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch. Sophomore Gage Herring (0-1) takes the ball for UNCW and Oluwasayo Kintunde (0-1) goes for Towson.

How it happened: UNCW struck for three runs in the fifth inning to erase an 2-0 deficit. Jones walked and moved around to third on a double by Zayicek. With two out, Bridges got UNCW on the board with a two-run single to tie the game. Doug Angeli followed two batters later with a single to center, giving UNCW the lead, 3-2.

Notes: Cole Weiss saw his career-long hitting streak halted at 13 games … The Seahawks were 9-for-16 with two out and drove in seven … Both teams landed their leadoff hitter on base four times … Relievers Justin Crump and Blake Morgan closed out the game with two strikeouts apiece in a combined 1.2 innings.
