Janel Gamache each registered a pair of hits, but it was not enough as UNCW dropped a pair of one-run decisions during the second day of the Courtyard by Marriott Seahawk Softball Classic at Boseman Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Seahawks, who dipped to 7-9 on the season, began the day with a 1-0 setback against UMBC before falling by a 5-4 margin to Lehigh.
Willis and Gamache each posted their two-hit efforts in the loss against Lehigh with identical 2-for-3 efforts. Gamache also scored a run and contributed a double while Willis drew a walk in the defeat.
Five other Seahawks each collected a hit in the doubleheader.
How It Happened vs. UMBC: The Retrievers scored the game's only run in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by junior Maddie Daigneau. Freshman Courtney Coppersmith earned the win in the circle after allowing just one hit while recording 17 strikeouts.
How It Happened vs. Lehigh: The Mountain Hawks scored twice in the third inning and added three more markers in the fifth inning to build a 5-0 lead they did not relinquish. Sophomore
Anna Knox ended Lehigh's shutout bid in the sixth inning when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded before UNCW added three more runs in the seventh inning, including a two-run single by senior
Anna Hessenthaler, to close the gap to 5-4.
