Seahawks Outslug Canisius in Sweep

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW used a 15-hit attack, including five extra-base hits, and a pair of strong pitching efforts to sweep a non-conference softball doubleheader against Canisius at Boseman Field on Tuesday afternoon.

The Seahawks, who improved to 18-12 on the season, claimed a 4-0 victory in the opener before posting a 10-1 triumph in a five-inning affair to complete the sweep. Canisius, meanwhile, dropped to 1-17 after extending its losing streak to six straight games.

Sophomore Carson Shaner led the Seahawks' offensive explosion by going 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and five runs batted in. Freshman Jada Santiago and redshirt junior Rachel Willis each added two-hit performances while eight other Seahawks tallied a hit in the twinbill.

Senior Haley Lenderman, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association Co-Pitcher of the Week, registered her third straight shutout performance in the opener, allowing just three hits with three strikeouts while upping her record to 7-4 on the season.

Junior Rylee Pate earned her eighth win in the circle in the nightcap, giving up just one hit in 3.0 innings of work.

How It Happened – Game 1: Shaner drove in all four runs in the Seahawks' victory, posting a RBI single in the bottom of the first inning before hitting her sixth home run of the season, a three-run shot in the third inning to give the Seahawks a 4-0 lead they did not relinquish.

How It Happened – Game 2: The Seahawks exploded for eight runs on six hits in the opening frame to take an 8-0 lead over the Golden Griffins. UNCW sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning, which featured a solo home run by Santiago and a Shaner RBI double.

Up Next: UNCW begins CAA play this weekend with a three-game series against Towson at Boseman Field. The Seahawks and the Tigers will play a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 23, before finishing the set with a single game on Sunday, Mar. 24.
