Lenderman Shuts Out Youngstown State

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Senior Haley Lenderman scattered just four hits en route to her third shutout of the season as UNCW closed out the Lafayette Ford Lincoln of Fayetteville Seahawk Softball Invitational by shutting out Youngstown State, 3-0, at Boseman Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Seahawks, who won three of their five games in the weekend tournament, improved to 16-12 on the season while Youngstown State dipped to 4-16.

UNCW scored all three of its runs in the fourth inning on the strength of a pair of triples and a single. Freshman Janel Gamache gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead when she hit a triple to right center field, scoring freshman Casey Jones, who walked to open the frame.

Sophomore Carson Shaner blasted a triple to left field two batters later, allowing Gamache to score for a 2-0 edge. Senior Anna Hessenthaler followed with a RBI single to center field for the Seahawks' third run.

Lenderman, meanwhile, posted her second shutout in as many days against the Penguins to increase her record to 6-4 on the season. The Rochester Hills, Mich., product retired 10 consecutive hitters at one point and registered three strikeouts while allowing just three runners to reach second base.

Sophomore Elle Buffenbarger (1-8) took the loss for Youngstown State, allowing three runs on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks in 3.2 innings.

Up Next: UNCW continues its 10-game homestand on Tuesday, Mar. 19, with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Canisius. The Golden Griffins dropped an 11-9 decision against Eastern Kentucky in the first game of Sunday's twinbill.
