WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW used a balanced hitting attack and a solid pitching performance from senior
Haley Lenderman to earn a split of its two games at the Lafayette Ford Lincoln of Fayetteville Seahawk Softball Invitational at Boseman Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Seahawks, who upped their record to 15-12 on the season, lost to Eastern Kentucky by a 6-2 count in the opener before blanking Youngstown State, 3-0, in the nightcap.
Four different Seahawks registered a two-hit effort in the doubleheader, including freshman
Janel Gamache and junior
Dominique Travers, who each hit a home run. Sophomore
Carson Shaner also added her fifth home run of the season against Eastern Kentucky.
Lenderman, meanwhile, posted her second solo shutout of the season against Youngstown State after scattering six hits in a complete-game effort with four strikeouts.
How It Happened vs. Eastern Kentucky: The Colonels scored two runs in three of the first four innings to build a 6-0 lead. UNCW trimmed the deficit to 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning on solo home runs by Gamache and Shaner, but was unable to get any closer.
