Baseball Falls Late To #10 Heels

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Tenth-ranked North Carolina plated seven runs over the final three innings to break a four-all deadlock in an 11-14 win over UNCW on Wednesday at Brooks Field.

The Tar Heels halted a brief three-game losing skid to improve to 14-4 on the season while the Seahawks saw their four-game winning streak snapped and fell to 10-8.

Brandon Martorano keyed the Heels lineup with four runs driven in, including three on his third home run of the season. Caleb Roberts added three hits and knocked in two runs.

Cole Weiss connected on his second homer of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth inning to tie the game at 4-all.

Reliever Connor Ollie (1-0) earned the win with 1.2 innings of shutout relief. The UNC bullpen combined for 6.1innings of two-hit shutout relief.

UNCW's Landen Roupp (1-2) took the loss despite striking out six and allowing one run over a career-long 5.2 innings of relief.

Up next: The Seahawks visit Memphis for a three-game series opening on Friday at 7 p.m. EST.

How it happened: The Tar Heels broke a 4-all deadlock in the seventh when Freeman tripled and came home one batter later on a wild pitch. The Heels added two more in the eighth and four more in the ninth.

Inside the box score: UNCW managed to get its leadoff hitter on base just once … Both teams had three two-out hits while UNC held a 3-2 advantage in two-out RBI's.

Notes: Weiss extended his career-long hitting streak to nine games with this third-inning round tripper … The Tar Heels avenged UNCW's sweep of the home-and-home series last season by sweeping this year's series … In two games against UNC, Roupp struck out 14 over 10.1inningsand allowed three runs, just one earned … The Seahawks still need two wins to reach the 1,700-mark all-time.
