Seahawks Split Pair at JoAnne Graf Classic

TALLAHASSEE, Florida – Freshman Jada Santiago registered three hits, including two home runs, and freshman Janel Gamache added a pair of extra-base hits as UNCW split a pair of one-run decisions at the JoAnne Graf Classic hosted by Florida State on Saturday afternoon.

The Seahawks, who split a pair of games for the second straight day, improved to 2-2 on the season. After dropping an 11-10 verdict against UNCG to begin the day, UNCW answered with a 3-2 triumph over Iowa State of the Big 12 Conference.

Santiago went 2-for-3 in the twinbill with a pair of runs scored while slugging the first two home runs of her college career in the loss against UNCG. Gamache, meanwhile, added a 2-for-6 effort with a double and a triple while driving in four runs.

Junior Rylee Pate upped her record to 2-0 in the circle after allowing two runs on four hits in a complete-game effort against Iowa State.

How It Happened vs. UNCG: After Santiago tied the game at 10-10 with a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning, the Spartans answered in the bottom of the frame when sophomore Makenna Matthijs singled through the left side with the bases loaded for the game-winning run.

How It Happened vs. Iowa State: The Seahawks overcame a 2-0 deficit in the top of the third inning when Gamache hit a bases-clearing triple to right center, giving UNCW a 3-2 edge. Pate, meanwhile, scattered three hits over the final four frames to nail down the victory.

Up Next: UNCW completes its opening weekend schedule on Sunday, Feb. 10, when the Seahawks close out the JoAnne Graf Classic against No. 1 Florida State at 12:30 p.m.
