Big Day For Baldwin Lifts Seahawks

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Freshman Brooks Baldwin drove in five runs on three hits, including his second home run of the season, as UNCW dropped Iona, 11-4, on Saturday in the Hughes Bros. Challenge at Brooks Field.

The win snapped UNCW's brief two-game skid and raised its record to 4-3. Iona, meanwhile, dropped its fifth straight game to open the season.

Baldwin raised his batting average to .375 with his three hits and his three-run double keyed 6-run fifth inning as UNCW snapped a 3-all deadlock for a 9-3 lead.
Greg Jones, who also homered, and Cole Weiss added two hits apiece.

Red-shirt junior Breydan Gorham (1-0) earned the win with three innings of shutout relief for UNCW.

Iona's Chris Dodrill (0-2) was tagged with the loss.

UP NEXT: The Seahawks close out the Challenge with a 1:30 p.m. start on Sunday against Marshall.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Iona tied the game in the top of the fifth, but UNCW plated six runs in the bottom half of the inning as Baldwin delivered a 3-run double to break the deadlock. Later in the inning, Zachary Bridges doubled in two more runs to put the game out of reach.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: The Seahawks were 5-for-13 with RISP while Iona was just 1-for-10 … UNCW pitchers allowed just one two-out hit and held the Gaels to one hit with runners on base.

NOTES: The Seahawks improved to 4-0 all-time against Iona … Baldwin's five-RBI day was the first by a Seahawk since Brian Mims did so against Northeastern (May 6, 2017) … He leads UNCW with nine RBI's on the season … UNCW's bullpen has all four wins this season … Gorham has fashioned a 1.08 earned run average through 8.1 innings over three appearances.
