Sycamores Edge Seahawks 1-0

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Starters Triston Polley for Indiana State and UNCW's Luke Gesell hooked up in a pitcher's duel on Friday and it was an unearned run that gave the Sycamores a 1-0 win over the Seahawks in the Hughes Bros. Challenge at Brooks Field.

The Sycamores ran their winning streak to open the season to four while the Seahawks dropped their second consecutive out to see their record dip to 3-3.

Polley (1-0) limited the Seahawks to three hits while walking two and striking out eight over six innings of work. Tyler Grauer converted the save over his 1.1 innings.

Gesell (0-2) was the hard luck loser, allowing two hits, an unearned run and fanned a career-high seven over a career-long 6.2 innings.

UNCW's Brooks Baldwin held game-high honors with two hits.

UP NEXT: The Seahawks play Iona on Saturday with a 2 p.m. first-pitch.

HOW IT HAPPENED: An unearned run in the top of the fourth was all either team could muster in the pitcher's duel. Jarrod Watkins lifted a ball down the left field foul line where it was misplayed for a two-base error. A sacrifice bunt moved him to third for Joe Boyle, who plated Watkins with a sacrifice fly to right.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: Both teams combined to go 0-16 with RISP, including UNCW at 0-12 … ISU's Clay Dugan had the lone two-out hit of the game, a double in the eighth inning … Gesell needed just 68 pitches to go 6.2 innings.

NOTES: Gesell is now 0-2 despite not allowing an earned run this season … UNCW's Greg Jones extended his hitting streak to four games and his consecutive games reached safely to 17.
