Angeli Collects Four Hits In Seahawk Loss

Sophomore infielder also connected on his first career homer

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Sophomore Doug Angeli collected four hits, including his first career home run, but UNCW was unable to overcome eight walks as 19th-ranked Coastal Carolina knocked off the Seahawks, 10-5, on Tuesday at Brooks Field.

The Chanticleers raised their record to 4-0 while the Seahawks dipped to 3-2 and saw their three-game winning streak halted.

Angeli held game-high honors with his career high four hits while junior Cole Weiss added three hits. Sophomore Greg Jones, Angeli and Weiss combined for all eight UNCW hits on the day.

For CCU, Cameron Pearcey banged out three hits while Kieton Rivers and Scott McKeon chipped in two apiece. Pearcey belted his first home run of the season in the eighth inning to make it 10-5 Chants.

Scott Kobos (1-0) earned the win, striking out four over two innings in a predetermined start. Alaska Abney posted his second save with three innings of shutout relief.

Justin Walke (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing five runs, three earned, in two-thirds of an inning.

Trailing 6-0 entering the fourth inning, UNCW scored twice in both the fourth and fifth innings and a run in the sixth to cut it to a 6-5 CCU lead. The Chants, however, answered with three in the top of the seventh for a 9-5 lead.

UP NEXT: The Seahawks host Indiana State, Iona and Marshall this weekend for the Hughes Bros. Challenge. Iona and Marshall open the weekend's schedule at noon on Friday followed by UNCW and Indiana State at 4 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Coastal Carolina jumped on Walke in the first inning for five runs. Two walks and a single loaded the bases and Kyle Skeels plated the first run with a sac fly. With two out, Rivers delivered a two-run single for a 3-0 lead.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: Five of UNCW's eight walks issued came around to score … Coastal landed its leadoff hitter on base in five innings while the Seahawks did so in four … UNCW went 0-3 with the bases loaded … CCU finished with six two-out RBI's and the Seahawks had three.

NOTES: Jones singled in the fifth inning to extend his hitting streak to four and his on base streak to 15 games … Weiss tied his career high with his three hits and is now hitting .421 on the young season … UNCW received another strong relief effort from Breydan Gorham with 2.1 innings of shutout baseball … Jason Hudak struck out the CCU side in the ninth inning.
