Seahawks Stay Hot In Men's Tennis

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The surging UNCW men's tennis team capped a successful five-match home stand by blowing past once-beaten Georgia Southern, 6-1, early Sunday at the UNCW Courts.

The Seahawks, playing the final segment of a five-match string in the Port City, improved to 5-4 this spring. The Eagles of the Sun Belt Conference had their five-match winning streak snapped and now stand 5-2.

UNCW claimed the early point after Austin Hussey and Michael Morphy trimmed GSU's JC Alcala and Antonio Muniz in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (4). It marked the fourth time the Seahawks have picked up the doubles point this season.

The Seahawks captured the first two singles matches off the court before Leo Sprovieri delivered the clincher with a 6-3, 6-2, victory over GSU's Martijn Kerssens at the No. 6 singles slot.

Hussey played No. 1 singles for the first time this season and remained undefeated in singles (6-0) by rallying past Stefano Di Aloy, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 7-5. Freshman Bruno Caula, at No. 4 singles, pushed his record to 5-1 with his fifth consecutive victory, routing Pascal Wagemaker, 6-1, 6-1.

"Our team is making strides in a number of areas and I was very pleased with how we played today," said Head Coach Mait DuBois "Our freshmen are improving with every match and the team competitive intensity was excellent today. We had very mature performances from our freshmen. Cole Groetsch was dominating in doubles and Bruno (Caula), Leo (Sprovieri), Davide (Innocenti) really showed some good stuff."

The Seahawks raised their home record to 4-1 and will play their next seven matches away from Wilmington. UNCW travels to California to take on San Diego on Friday, Feb. 22, in the first of two matches on the west coast.
