Baldwin Lifts Diamond Hawks Over Saint Joseph's

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Freshman Brooks Baldwin had three hits, including a go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh inning as UNCW rallied to upend Saint Joseph's, 10-8, in college baseball action on Saturday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks, who also rallied for a win on Friday, ran their record to 2-1 with the victory while the Hawks dipped to 1-2.

Baldwin finished a double shy of hitting for the cycle. He singled in the second and added a RBI triple in the third inning. Junior Kep Brown added three hits of his own, including a pair of doubles.

Also finishing with multiple-hit games were Greg Jones and Zachary Bridges. Jones drove in three runs and Bridges hit his first career homer in the third inning.

Senior reliever Blake Morgan (1-0) earned the win, striking out five over 2.1 innings of hitless baseball.

Brenden Hueth and James McCannon, who finished with three RBI's collected two hits apiece for SJU while Andrew Cossetti launched a three-run homer in the fourth inning. Liam Bendo added two hits.

Reliever Hayden Seig (0-1) took the loss.

UP NEXT: The Seahawks close out the weekend with a 1:30 p.m. start against VMI.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Trailing 8-7 in the bottom of the seventh, junior Riley Zayicek earned a walk to open the inning and Baldwin belted a 1-0 offering over the wall in right-center for a 9-8 Seahawk lead. Jones added a RBI ground ball later in the inning to push it to 10-8.

NOTES: Five UNCW pitchers combined for 18 strikeouts on the afternoon … Starter Landen Roupp and Morgan each collected five strikeouts … UNCW's 18 strikeouts were the most since the 2012 season when the Seahawks fanned 19 against Elon on Apr. 25 … Current UNCW assistant Kelly Secrest struck out 12 Elon hitters over 5.1 innings of relief in that game … Brown extended his hitting streak to eight games, dating back to last season, with a single in the first inning … Nick Bruno struck out three and allowed one hit in 2.1 innings of relief for the Seahawks … Jones saw his consecutive games reached safely to 14 … With both wins this season, the UNCW bullpen has collected 31 of UNCW's last 41 wins.
