Brown Lifts Seahawks Past Keydets, 5-2

UNCW drops opener to Saint Joseph's

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Kep Brown's two-run single broke a 2-all deadlock in the bottom of the eighth as UNCW rallied past VMI, 5-2, in the second game of a twinbill for the Seahawks on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks, who dropped their season-opener earlier in the day to Saint Joseph's, even their record at 1-1 on the young season. The Keydets also moved to 1-1 after earning a win over SJU in the tournament opener earlier on Friday.

Junior Henry Ryan (1-0) earned the win, striking out four and allowing one hit over two innings of relief. Senior Blake Morgan nailed down his first save of the season and the second of his career with a perfect ninth inning.

VMI reliever Derek Trembley (0-1) took the loss.

Callen Nuccio, Jake Huggins, Nathan Loyd and Will Knight each had two hits for VMI.

UP NEXT: Due to inclement weather, Saturday's schedule will be decided Saturday morning.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Seahawks scored four runs on four hits in the eighth to take a 5-2 lead. Pinch hitter Noah Liles and Greg Jones both singled to open the inning and a VMI fielding error loaded the bases. Cole Weiss drew a walk to force the tying run and Brown followed with a single to right that scored two. Noah Bridges plated the final run with a two-out infield single.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: VMI managed 11 hits, but just two with two outs while the Seahawks had just one two-out hit … VMI starter Adam Jewell tossed five hitless innings in his collegiate debut … Adam Smith broke up the no-hitter with a clean single to left to open the sixth … UNCW starter Brody Lawson struck out seven in his collegiate debut of 3.2 innings … In the opener, UNCW starter Luke Gesell allowed three runs, all unearned, in the opener over five innings … SJU starter Jake Meyers stymied the Seahawks over six shutout innings for the win … The loss to SJU snapped a 10-game winning streak for UNCW in season openers … Weiss drove in UNCW's only runs of the game with a two-run single in the ninth.
