Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Stanford Turns Back Seahawks In California

PALO ALTO, California – Junior forward Oscar da Silva scored 13 points in each half and finished 11-for-14 from the floor as once-beaten Stanford held off UNCW, 72-54, in a Sunday men's basketball matinee at Maples Pavilion.

Stanford, playing its seventh home game, improved to 8-1 this season and remained perfect in seven appearances at Maples. The Seahawks stand 5-5 following a two-game western road swing.

Freshman forward Spencer Jones also scored 17 for the Cardinal, who are off to their best start since 2011. Da Silva reached double figures for the eighth time this season and registered a new career high with his 26 points.

Sophomore guard Jaylen Sims and sophomore forward Marten Linssen scored 12 points apiece for the Seahawks, who outscored the Cardinal, 35-34, in the second half.

"We started off slow, but I thought we did a nice job of competing the rest of the game," said third-year Head Coach C.B. McGrath. "They're a good team and they got off to a hot start.

"In the second half, we did a nice job of running our stuff and getting good shots. We got some open looks and made them. When we ran our stuff, we got good shots

"They're a very good basketball team this year. The non-conference schedule is designed to help us prepare for the conference season and we'll take a lot of positives from this."

Stanford shot 51.9 percent from the field, including 57 percent in the second period, to spoil UNCW's debut at Maples Pavilion. The two teams met last November in Wilmington.

The Seahawks fell behind at halftime, 38-19, but staged several rallies in the second half behind good execution and sharp long distance shooting. UNCW drained 7-for-13 from deep in the final period and connected on 10-for-21 for the contest.

Trailing 42-23 with 17 minutes left, the Seahawks closed the gap to 44-29, on a trifecta along the left wing by Brian Tolefree. The Cardinal increased the margin to 70-47 with just under three minutes left, but the Seahawks reeled off eight straight points to cut into the lead once again.

The Cardinal scored the first 12 points of the game and led, 14-2, after junior guard Daejon Davis converted a driving layup with 15:42 left in the first half. The Seahawks answered with a 9-0 run, however, and climbed within 14-11 when Tolefree made the second of two straight layups with 11:02 on the clock.

A pair of Jones treys kick started a 11-0 spurt for the Cardinal to extend the margin to 25-11 at the eight-minute mark and Stanford enjoyed its largest lead of the half, 38-19, at intermission.

The Seahawks return home to entertain state rival Charlotte on Saturday, Dec. 7, in the first meeting between the two state schools since the season opener of the 1995-96 season.
