"Defensively, they took it right at us," said C.B. McGrath, UNCW's third-year head coach. "It was a physical game. Our guys were there, but we weren't playing as physical as we needed to. We knew they were going to attack the lane."

In the first meeting since Nov. 25, 1995, UNCW came out cold from the floor and missed 17 of its first 20 shots. Charlotte, meanwhile, capitalized early to put the Seahawks in a big hole.

After Seahawk playmaker Kai Toews scored on a layup to help the Seahawks close to 7-6 with 16:28 remaining in the first half, the 49ers exploded in the next 12 minutes to build a 39-18 advantage at halftime.

As UNCW missed 12 consecutive field goals over a 10:07 stretch, six different 49ers scored on a variety of shots and the lead ballooned to 37-8 with 3:13 left in the first half. A running three-pointer by junior guard Mike Okauru at the buzzer closed out the first 20 minutes.

The Seahawks sliced the lead to 13 points, 57-44, with 10:34 left on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Brian Tolefree, but Charlotte rattled off five quick points and cruised the rest of the way to win its seventh straight game against UNCW.

The Seahawks, who outscored the 49ers in the second half, 39-37, return to the floor following finals when Mercer visits Trask on Mon., Dec. 16, for a 7 p.m. tip.
