UNCW Drops Heartbreaker To Pride

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW seniors Madison Peters had 16 kills and Kendall Bender added 14, but it wasn't enough as Hofstra clipped the Seahawks in five sets at Hanover Hall on Saturday.

The Pride upped its record to 16-9 overall and 9-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association. UNCW, which has played 10 five-set matches this season, fell to 14-13 and 4-10 in the league.

The Seahawks drew even in the fifth set at 9-all on a Hofstra attack error. The Pride, however, reeled off the next five points with a trio of UNCW hitting errors and a pair of kills by Laura Masciullo to make it 14-9.

Peters finished one kill short of tying her career-high set earlier this season.

Junior Jaime Thomas posted a double-double of 10 kills and 12 digs and recorded a career-high seven blocks on the afternoon for the Seahawks.

Seahawk junior setter Brynn Montgomery had 26 assists and a team-high 19 digs.

Masciullo held match-high honors with 24 kills, but no other Pride player reached double digits. Setter Luisa Sydlik added five kills and doled out a match-high 49 assists.

The Pride crafted a 78-68 advantage in digs behind 27 from Juliana Vaz.

The Seahawks have a short-turnaround as they host conference-leading and undefeated Towson on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Hanover Hall.
