Despite Loss, Seahawks Remain Alive For Postseason Play

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Despite seeing its postseason hopes taking a hit after a four-set loss to Colonial Athletic Association leader Towson on Sunday at Hanover Hall, UNCW still has a chance at earning the final tournament berth.

The Seahawks fell to 14-14 on the season and 4-11 in the league and hosts Charleston on Nov. 17, at 1 p.m., in the regular season finale for both programs.

With Delaware sitting in the final tournament berth at 5-11, UNCW needs to beat the Cougars and have Delaware lose twice. The Blue Hens visit Northeastern and Hofstra next week on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

The Tigers remained perfect in conference play at 14-0 with the win, ran their winning streak to 18 straight and pushed their overall record to 24-2.

Junior Jaime Thomas paced the Seahawk offense with 12 kills and closed out a double-double with 10 digs. Adding 10 kills and nine blocks was senior Kendall Bender.

Olivia Finckel of Towson recorded a match-high 17 kills and led three Tigers in double-digit kills. Lydia Wiers had 16 and Emily Jarome chipped in 15. Towson out hit the Seahawks, .297-.137.

The Seahawks won the opening set, 25-23, behind four service aces and five blocks.

In the third set, UNCW had a chance to go up 2-1, but Towson rallied from a 23-19 deficit to draw even at 24-all following a kill from Annie Ertz. Trailing 25-24 with UNCW serving to close it out, Ertz, Jarome and Silvia Grassini recorded back-to-back-to-back kills to win it for Towson, 27-25.

Next Sunday, the Seahawks will honor their two seniors, Madison Peters and Bender, prior to first-serve.
