Seahawks Begin December Slate With Cardinal

PALO ALTO, Calif. – One year after hosting Stanford in a rare visit by a Pac-12 school to Trask Coliseum, the UNCW men's basketball team pays a return visit to the West Coast power to battle the Cardinal in a Sunday matinee at Maples Pavilion.

The Seahawks, 5-4, are playing the second leg of a western swing during the Thanksgiving holiday and face Stanford at 4 pm. ET. Boise State handed C.B. McGrath's club an 80-59 loss on Friday night, snapping UNCW's modest two-game winning streak.

The Cardinal, 7-1, are off to a strong start in 2019-20, winning seven of their first eight games. Stanford last played on Nov. 26 and dropped a narrow 68-67 decision to Butler in the championship game of the Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City. The Cardinal routed Oklahoma, 73-54, in the tournament's opening game.

Freshman sensation Tyrell Terry and veteran Oscar da Silva give Stanford a pair of explosive scorers. Terry leads the club with 16.5 points per game, while Silva is collecting 15.4 ppg and a team-best 5.4 rpg. Spencer Jones gives the Cardinal three players in double digits at 10.3 ppg.

Following Sunday's clash in Palo Alto, the Seahawks return home to renew their in-state rivalry against Charlotte. The two teams have not played since the 1995-96 season.

The pairing with Stanford will be carried over the air on The Breeze 95.9 FM, with play-by-play voice Mike Vaccaro on the call. The game can be heard anywhere in the world on the station's website, 959thebreeze.com. Video will be provided on the Pac-12 Network.

Seahawk Storylines
  • The Seahawks are the second CAA opponent for Stanford in a 10-day span. Stanford cruised past William & Mary, 81-50, on Nov. 21 in Palo Alto.
  • Stanford has not played a true road game this season. The Cardinal stand 6-0 at home and 1-1 on neutral courts in 2019-20.
  • Shooting is Stanford's strength. Coach Jerod Haase's club is connecting on 50.2 percent from the field and 71.3 percent at the free throw line.
  • UNCW's C.B. McGrath and Haase played together at the University of Kansas for three years. They were roommates at KU for two seasons (McGrath's sophomore and junior years) and coached together at UNC for 14 years.
  • The Seahawks have played six of the league's 12 schools and compiled a 3-5 record against the group. UNCW is seeking its first true road win against the Pac-12 in four tries.
  • The Seahawks are concluding a challenging slate of five games in 10 days. They will have travelled more than 6,000 miles via five flights during the six-day trip to the Pacific Northwest and West Coast.
  • The Seahawks play their first game in December. After opening the campaign with nine games in the first month of the season, UNCW tackles six games in December - two at home and four on the road.
  • The Pac-12 has a soft spot in the Seahawks' heart. UNCW's lone NCAA Tournament victory came on March 14, 2002, when the Seahawks stunned fourth-seeded Southern Cal, 93-89, in overtime at Arco Arena in Sacramento.
  • Seahawk junior guard Mike Okauru, a transfer from Florida, is no stranger to the Cardinal. He pocketed 15 points against Stanford as a freshman at UF when the Gators met the Cardinal in the PK80 Tournament in the fall of 2017.
  • In their five victories this season, the Seahawks have shot 55.5 percent and averaged 97.0 ppg. In four losses, the Seahawks made just 35.1 percent and collected 54.0 ppg.
