Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Joe Browning

Broncos Buck Seahawks In First Meeting

BOISE, Idaho – Boise State broke open a close game with a 12-0 spurt late in the second half and rode a combined 45 points from aggressive guards Derrick Alston and RJ Williams to an 80-59 victory over UNCW in the first men's basketball meeting between the two teams on Friday night at ExtraMile Arena.

The Broncos of the Mountain West Conference won their third straight game to improve to 4-2 on the season with the non-conference victory on the day after Thanksgiving.

UNCW stands 5-4 after dropping the first leg of a two-game western swing. The Seahawks shoot over to Palo Alto for a Sunday matinee against Pac-12 member Stanford.

Alston, a high-flying 6-9 junior guard, poured in a game-high 24 points and the 6-7 slippery Williams added 21 as the Broncos thwarted several Seahawk comebacks. Senior guard Justinian Jessup added 19 points, including 16 in the second half, as BSU placed three men in double figures.

Sophomore guard Jaylen Sims paced two players in double digits with 16 points for the Seahawks, who shot 40 percent on the night. Sophomore forward Marten Linssen shook off early foul trouble to contribute 14 points – all in the second half – and a team-high seven rebounds.

"I thought we did a good job with our three-point defense and contesting their shots," said C.B. McGrath, UNCW's third-year head coach. "We just need to do a better job of recognizing the scouting report and what they're going to do. We knew it was going to be a physical game inside. We made an effort to get the ball inside and put the pressure on them. We competed hard in the first half to get back into the game.

"We're young, but we're competing. It's not perfect. When you compete, you still have a chance. We competed for a while, but with the fouls and turnovers, it was tough down the stretch."

Trailing by five points at the break, the Seahawks closed to 39-38 on a Sims jumper near the free throw line with 16:56 remaining. But Alston converted a driving layup, scored on a slam dunk and Alex Hobbs drained a three-pointer to push the margin back to 46-38 at 15:10.

The Seahawks were still hanging around, behind just 55-47, when the Broncos reeled off 12 unanswered points to pull away. Alston launched a three-ball on the left wing, Williams connected on back-to-back buckets and Jessup tacked on five points to extend the margin to 67-47 with 6:36 on the clock.

BSU registered its largest lead in the contest, 80-57, on a Dennis Rayj jumper in the paint with 30 seconds left to play.

In the first half, the Seahawks spotted the Broncos a 10-point lead before settling down and cutting into the early deficit. Williams and Alston were a two-man wrecking crew for the Broncos, scoring 23 of the team's 35 first-half points to give the Broncos a 35-30 advantage at the half.

BSU opened up its largest lead of the first half out of the gate when Jessup drained a triple in the left corner to give the Broncos a 10-0 bulge at the 15:53 mark.

Sims scored 11 of his points in the first period, however, as the Seahawks kept close. He drained a three-pointer from the top of the key and Brian Tolefree made a driving layup to bring the Seahawks within 30-29 at 2:05. But Alston responded with a string of five points before Sims made a bucket with 28 seconds left to complete the first half scoring.
