Seahawks Outlast Panthers In D.C.

Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sophomore forward Marten Linssen scored a career-high 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds to propel UNCW past FIU, 66-63, in the Battle for the Capital tournament early Saturday at the DC Entertainment and Sports Arena.

The Seahawks improved to 4-3 after splitting a pair of games during their weekend trip to the nation's capital. The Panthers had their two-game winning streak snapped and stand 3-3 on the season.

The Seahawks return home to close out play in the Battle for the Capital with an on-campus game on Tuesday, Nov. 26, against NCAA Division III Emory & Henry in a 7 p.m. matchup at Trask Coliseum.

UNCW moved to 3-0 lifetime against FIU, winning three games against the Panthers by a combined six points.

Linssen, from Dusseldorf, Germany, led all scorers in the contest and anchored three players in double figures for the Seahawks. Sophomore guard Jaylen Sims added 14 points and freshman forward Imajae Dodd finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Junior guard Isaiah Banks paced the Panthers with 15 points, followed by senior forward Devon Andrews with 14 and sophomore guard Antonio Daye, Jr., with 13. Senior forward Osasumwen Osaghae pulled down a game-high 11 boards for FIU.

The two teams battled to a draw after 20 minutes and were locked up in a tight contest in the final period before the Seahawks outlasted the Floridians down the stretch.

After watching an eight-point advantage dissipate at the 12-minute mark of the second half, the Seahawks regrouped to push the margin back to eight points when Brian Tolefree converted both ends of a bonus situation at the 9:41 mark.

The lead increased to 10 points, 55-45, when Sims drained the team's lone three-pointer of the game with 7:10 remaining, but the Panthers rallied to climb within 64-63 on a triple with under a minute left to play.

FIU drew a charge on the defensive end with 13 seconds left and on its next possession sent Andrews to the line with 2.7 seconds on the clock. He missed both free throw attempts, however, and Dodd grabbed the rebound to secure the win.

The two teams traded buckets throughout the first half with 11 lead changes, but Linssen was the difference maker for the Seahawks. Linssen eclipsed his career high in the first half with 12 points and grabbed eight boards in the opening 20 minutes.

The Seahawks reeled off eight unanswered points out of the blocks to take a 10-2 advantage after a slam by Linssen with 17:20 remaining in the first half.

But FIU dialed long distance and answered with an 11-0 spurt to take a three-point lead, 13-10. Cameron Corcoran's triple on the right wing with 15:33 on the block gave the Panthers the lead back.

The score went back and forth until the Seahawks rallied from four points down to draw even at intermission. Trailing 33-29, UNCW knotted the score when Sims drove hard to the basket for a bucket and Linssen tossed in a pair of free throws with less than a second on the clock.
