Volleyball Opens Road Weekend With Big Win

ELON, N.C. – Needing a win to stay in the hunt for a Colonial Athletic Association tournament berth, UNCW powered past host Elon in four sets (25-22,25-23,16-25, 25-19) on Friday at the Schar Center.

The Seahawks improved to 13-11 overall and 3-8 in the conference while the Phoenix dropped to 12-14 and 6-6. UNCW finished off a sweep of the home-and-home conference series. The Seahawks are now in seventh place, trailing idle Delaware for the sixth and final tournament berth.

Heading up the big win were junior Jaime Thomas and senior Madison Peters, who combined for 27 kills. Thomas hit .344 on the evening with a team-leading and career-high tying 14 kills. Peters, meanwhile, added 13 kills and five blocks.

With eight blocks, senior Kendall Bender moved into seventh on UNCW's career list with 365. The Seahawks finished with a 13-7 advantage in blocks.

UNCW setter junior Brynn Montgomery finished a kill shy of posting her fourth triple-double of the season, finishing with nine kills, 19 assists and 14 digs.

Junior Anna Weissmann collected a match-high 20 digs for the Seahawks.

Elon's Leah Daniel held match-high honors with 18 kills but was limited to a 191 average. Kellyn Trowse chipped in 10 kills.

The Seahawks play their final road match of the season on Sunday when they visit William & Mary for a 1 p.m. start. UNCW plays its final four matches of the season at home beginning on Nov. 7 against Northeastern.
