Volleyhawks Continue To Move Up In Standings

UNCW now tied for sixth and final tournament berth with four matches to play


WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Kendall Bender's 11 kills led three Seahawks in double figure kills as UNCW moved into tie for the final Colonial Athletic Association tournament berth with a 3-1 (25-17, 16-25, 25-20, 25-23) at William & Mary on Sunday.

The Seahawks, who also finished off a weekend road sweep for the first time this season, improved to 14-11 and 4-8 in the CAA, tying Delaware, who lost at Towson on Sunday. The Tribe, meanwhile, tumbled to 7-17 and 3-10.

Bender, a senior, finished the match with a .421 hitting average with those 11 kills in 19 attempts.

Sophomore Rebecca Nuanez added a career-high nine kills and posted a match-high seven blocks, one short of tying her career high.

Joining Bender in double figures were senior Madison Peters and junior Jaime Thomas, each with 10.

UNCW setters Brynn Montgomery, a junior, and sophomore Claire Sawyer both recorded double-doubles with Montgomery dishing out 26 assists and collecting 10 digs. Sawyer chipped in a career-high 21 assists and 11 digs.

William & Mary's Kate Dedrick held match-high honors with 16 kills while Julia Brown had 11 herself and hit .526.

Autumn Brenner doled out 42 assists for the Tribe.

The Seahawks open a season-ending four-match homestand on Nov.7 against Northeastern.
