UNCW Tags Phoenix With First CAA Loss

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Fueled by a season-high 17 blocks, UNCW upended Elon in four sets (25-17, 25-17, 22-25, 25-18) in Colonial Athletic Association volleyball action on Sunday at Hanover Hall.

With the win, UNCW earns it first conference win of the season to improve to 11-6 overall and 1-3 in the league. The Phoenix, meanwhile, dropped their first CAA match of the season and slid to 8-9 and 3-1.

Freshman Brooke Hanshumaker headed up the charge at the net, recording nine blocks, and senior Kendall Bender added six.

Offensively, junior Jaime Thomas topped the Seahawks with 10 kills. Bender added eight and senior Madison Peters and junior Brynn Montgomery chipped in seven apiece.

Elon's Leah Daniel led all with 17 kills.

UNCW junior Anna Weissmann tied a career-high with 26 digs as UNCW posted a 71-64 advantage in digs.

Leading 1-0 and tied at 16-all in the second, UNCW closed out the set with a 9-1 run, capped by kills from Thomas twice and Hanshumaker. That set, alone, saw 12 tied scores and eight lead changes before the Seahawks took control.

The teams combined for 28 blocks on the afternoon.

The Seahawks next visit Northeastern on Oct. 11 for a 7 p.m. start.
